Le Coran

Here are all the Koranic verses about slavery.First of all the Koran never condemns slavery, not even implictly, and I repeat, not even by implication.

Secondly,it makes the freedom of the slave be conditional.I repeat, conditional,on the good opinion of the master. This is not the same thing as saying:”I condemn the idea of slavery itself.”

To verify the Koranic citations go to quranbrowser.com, which has:

1.Six translations by Muslims.

2.Four translations by non-Muslims.

3.The text in Arabic, with Latin letters.

The Different Categories of Verses

1.The Verse that says to Free a Slave who asks for it,but it is Conditional

2.The Verses that Encourage Freeing Slaves

3.Verses about the Right of a Married Muslim to have Sex with a Slave to who he is Not Married

4.Verses about Slavery in General

5.Parables by Allah using a Slave

6.Verses to be Good to Slaves

7.Verses that say you can Marry a Slave

Give Freedom to a Slave, but Only if he Merits it

Chapter 24:33:

“And let those who find not the means to marry be abstinent till God enriches them of His bounty.

Those your right hands own (Note:slaves) who seek emancipation, contract with them accordingly, if you know some good in them; and give them of the wealth of God that He has given you. And constrain not your slave-girls to prostitution, if they desire to live in chastity, that you may seek the chance goods of the present life. Whosoever constrains them, surely God, after their being constrained, is All-forgiving, All-compassionate.”

It is also made implicit in this verse:

Chapter 8:70:

“O Prophet, say to the captives (Note:people made slaves in war) in your hands: “If God knows of any good in your hearts He will give you better than what has been taken from you, and He will forgive you; surely God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate.” ”

“You are taking the verses out of context”

They mean to say that there is something:

1.In the 23-year career of Muhammad and/or

2.In the Muslim traditions,

That limit the existence of slavery to Muhammad’s lifetime, the for Muhammad slavery was to be gradually abolished. That is not true.We know because after Muhammad died in 632 he was succeeded by:

a)Abu Bekr,his father-in-law (ruled 632-634)

b)Omar (one of Muhammad’s generals and friends)(ruled 634-644,assasinated)

c)Othman(another of Muhammad’s friends)(ruled 644-656,assasinated)

d)Ali,the son-in-law and cousin of Muhammad, married to Fatima,Muhammad’s daughter( ruled from 656-661,and was later assasinated).

There is nothing in the documents about the friends and relatives of Muhammad that say they were for abolishing slavery, that it was only temporary,etc. The Koran-only Muslims can’t deny it.

Allah Discourages Rich People from giving Wealth to their Slaves to make the Slaves Equal to their Masters

Chapter 16:71:

“And God has preferred some of you over others in provision/wealth/wordlypossessions;, but those that were preferred will not give their wealth/their provision to that their right hands possess(Note:slaves), so that they may be equal therein. What, and do they deny God’s blessing?.”

Analysis

Again, notice here Allah says that rich people should not give their wealth to their slaves to make the slaves be their equals.

Encouragement to Free Slaves (7 Examples)

But chapter 24:33 limits it to those who the master thinks deserve it.

Example 1:

Chapter 90:10-16:

“And guided him on the two highways? Yet he has not assaulted the steep; and what will teach you what is the steep?

The freeing of a slave,or giving food upon a day of hunger to an orphan near of kin or a needy man in misery.”

Example 2:

Chapter 58:3:

“And those who say, regarding their wives, “Be as my mother’s back,” and then retract what they have said, they will set free a slave, before the two of them touch one another. By that you are admonished; and God is aware of the things you do.”

Example 3:

Chapter 47:4:

“When you meet the unbelievers, smite their necks, then, when you have made wide slaughter among them, tie fast the bonds;

then set them free, either by grace or ransom, till the war lays down its loads. So it will be; and if God had willed, He would have avenged Himself upon them; but that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of God, He will not send their works astray.”

Example 4:

Chapter 2:177:

“It is not piety, that you turn your faces to the East and to the West. True piety is this: to believe in God, and the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the Prophets, to give of one’s substance, however cherished,

to kinsmen, and orphans, the needy, the traveller, beggars, and to ransom the slave, to perform the prayer, to pay the alms. And they who fulfil their covenant when they have engaged in a covenant, and endure with fortitude misfortune, hardship and peril, these are they who are true in their faith, these are the truly godfearing.”

Example 5:

Chapter 4:92:

“It belongs not to a believer to slay a believer, except it be by error. If any slays a believer by error, then let him set free a believing slave, and bloodwit is to be paid to his family unless they forgo it as a freewill offering.

If he belong to a people at enmity with you and is a believer, let the slayer set free a believing slave. If he belong to a people joined with you by a compact, then bloodwit is to be paid to his family and the slayer will set free a believing slave. But if he finds not the means, let him fast two successive months,God’s turning; God is All-knowing, All-wise.”

Example 6:

Chapter 5:89:

“God will not take you to task for a slip in your oaths; but He will take you to task for such bonds as you have made by oaths, whereof the expiation is to feed ten poor persons with the average of the food you serve to your families, or to clothe them, or to set free a slave; or if any finds not the means, let him fast for three days. That is the expiation of your oaths when you have sworn; but keep your oaths. So God makes clear to you His signs; haply you will be thankful.”

Example 7:

Chapter 9:60:

“The freewill offerings are for the poor and needy, those who work to collect them, those whose hearts are brought together, the ransoming of slaves, debtors, in God’s way, and the traveller; so God ordains; God is All-knowing, All-wise.”

Verse to be Good to a Slave

Chapter 76:8:

“They give food, for the love of Him, to the needy, the orphan, the captive.”

Verses that you can Marry a Slave (4 Examples)

Example 1:

Chapter 2:221:

“Do not marry idolatresses, until they believe; a believing slavegirl is better than an idolatress, though you may admire her.

And do not marry idolaters, until they believe. A believing slave is better than an idolater, though you may admire him. Those call to the Fire; and God calls to Paradise, and pardon, by His leave, and He makes clear His signs to the people; haply they will remember.”

Example 2:

Chapter 4:3:

“If you fear that you will not act justly towards the orphans, marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, four; but if you fear you will not be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands own(Note:slave); so it is likelier you will not be partial.”

Example 3:

Chapter 4:25:

“Any one of you who has not the affluence to be able to marry believing freewomen in wedlock, let him take believing handmaids that your right hands own(Note:slaves); God knows very well your faith; the one of you is as the other.

So marry them, with their people’s leave, and give them their wages honourably as women in wedlock, not as in licence or taking lovers. But when they are in wedlock, if they commit indecency, they will be liable to half the chastisement of freewomen. That provision is for those of you who fear fornication; yet it is better for you to be patient. God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate.”

Example 4:

Chapter 24:32:

“Marry the spouseless among you, and your slaves and handmaidens that are righteous; if they are poor, God will enrich them of His bounty; God is All-embracing, All-knowing.”

Verses about Slavery in General (3 Examples)

Example 1:

Chapter 2:178:

“O believers, prescribed for you is retaliation, touching the slain; freeman for freeman, slave for slave, female for female.

But if aught is pardoned a man by his brother, let the pursuing be honourable, and let the payment be with kindliness. That is a lightening granted you by your Lord, and a mercy; and for him who commits aggression after that, for him there awaits a painful chastisement.”

Example 2:

Chapter 43:32:

“What, is it they who divide the mercy of the Lord? We have divided between them their livelihood in the present life:

1.And raised some of them above others in rank,

2.That some of them may take others in servitude/in subjection/take the other to serve him;

and the mercy of thy Lord is better than that they amass.”

Example 3:

Chapter 24:58:

“O believers, let those your right hands own(Note:slaves) and those of you who have not reached puberty ask leave of you three times:before the prayer of dawn, and when you put off your garments at the noon, and after the evening prayer, three times of nakedness for you. There is no fault in you or them, apart from these, that you go about one to the other. So God makes clear to you the signs; and God is All-knowing, All-wise.”

Parables by Allah about Slaves (3 Parables)

Example 1:

Chapter 16:75:

“God has struck a parable/similitude/comparison/example: a slave (Note:the Arabic word is “abd”,slave) possessed by his master, having no power over anything, and one who We have provided of Ourselves with a provision fair, and he expends of it secretly and openly. Are they equal? Praise belongs to God! No, most of them know not.”

Example 2:

Chapter 16:76:

“God has struck a parable/similitude/comprison/example: two men, one of them dumb, having no power over anything, and he is a burden upon his master, wherever he despatches him, he brings no good. Is he equal to him who bids to justice, and is on a straight path?”

Example 3:

Chapter 30:28:

“He has struck for you a parable/similitude from yourselves; do you have, among that your right hands own(Note:slaves), associates in what We have provided for you so that you are equal in regard to it, you fearing them as you fear each other? So We distinguish the signs for a people who understand.”

Here are the versess that say a married Muslim man can have sex with his slave girl to who he is not married(adultery)(4 Examples)

Example 1:

It begins by Muhammad as a Example.Notice that a in other cultures a married man sleeping with a woman to who he is not married (whether she is his slave or not) would be commitng adultery.

Chapter 33:50-55:

“O ProphetWe(Note:Allah) have made lawful for you(Note:for sex):

1.Your wives who you have given their wages

2.And what your right hand owns (Note:slaves), spoils of war that God has given you,

3.And the daughters of your uncles paternal and aunts paternal, your uncles maternal and aunts maternal, who have emigrated with thee, and any woman believer, if she give herself to the Prophet and if the Prophet desire to take her in marriage, for you exclusively, apart from the believers.

4.We know what We have imposed upon them touching their wives and what their right hands own (note:slaves)that there may be no fault in you; God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate………………………..Thereafter women are not lawful to you(Note:for sex), neither for you to take other wives in exchange for them, though their beauty please you, except what your right hand owns (Note:slaves); God is watchful over everything.”

Analysis

Notice that 2 times there is a distinction of the women into 2 different groups:

a.The wives of Muhammad

b.And his female slaves, which he had got through war.

So Muhammad could sleep with a woman who was not his wife,it was not adultery,if she was his slave.

Again there is the Distinction between the Wife of Muhammad and his Slaves

“O believers, enter not the houses of the Prophet, except leave is given you for a meal, without watching for its hour. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have had the meal, disperse, neither lingering for idle talk; that is hurtful to the Prophet, and he is ashamed before you; but God is not ashamed before the truth. And when you ask his wives for any object, ask them from behind a curtain; that is cleaner for your hearts and theirs. It is not for you to hurt God’s Messenger, neither to marry his wives after him, ever; surely that would be, in God’s sight, a monstrous thing.Whether you reveal anything, or whether you conceal it, surely God has knowledge of everything.

There is no fault in the Prophet’s wives touching their fathers, their sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, and what their right hands own. And fear you God; surely God is witness of everything.”

Example 2:

Chapter 23:1-7:

“Prosperous are the believers who in their prayers are humble and from idle talk turn away and at almsgiving are active and guard their private parts(Note:for sex)

1.Save from their wives

2.And what their right hands own (Note:slaves) then they are not guilty.”

Example 3:

Chapter 4:23-24:

“Forbidden to you(Note:for sex) are:

1.Your mothers and daughters, your sisters, your aunts paternal and maternal, your brother’s daughters, your sister’s daughters, your mothers who have given suck to you, your suckling sisters, your wives’ mothers, your stepdaughters who are in your care being born of your wives you have been in to, but if you have not yet been in to them it is no fault in you,and the spouses of your sons who are of your loins, and that you should take to you two sisters together, unless it be a thing of the past; God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate;

2.And wedded women,

save what your right hands own(Note:slaves).”

Analysis

Notice the married Muslim can sleep with his slave woman even if she is a married slave woman, married to somebody else

“So God prescribes for you. Lawful for you, beyond all that, is that you may seek, using your wealth, in wedlock and not in licence. Such wives as you enjoy thereby, give them their wages apportionate; it is no fault in you in your agreeing together, after the due apportionate. God is All-knowing, All-wise.”

Example 4:

“And go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord, from their Lord’s chastisement none feels secure, and guard their private parts (Note:for sex)
save:

1.From their wives

2.And what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy

but who seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors.”
