The Habib-Leila 6 month marriage is from minute 21 to minute 27 of the video. There takes place what in Arabic is called Muta and in Persian is called Sighe. It is temporary marriage.

What is Temporary Marriage?

It is practiced by the 10% of Muslims who are Shia.A temporary marriage is one where:

1.A man gives a woman money as a dowry and depending on the amount it lasts 1 hour,1 day,a month,6 months, one year.

2.It is automatically dissolved on completion of its term

The Shias live in Iran and in Irak they are 60% of the population and constitute over 35% of the population in Lebanon, over 45% of the population in Yemen,20-40% of the population in Kuwait, over 20% in Turkey,10–20% of the population in Pakistan(which has 180 million in total),and 10-19% of Afghanistan’s population.

In the video they get married for 6 months,he agrees to pay her $200 for 6 months. It is his 3rd muta marriage, his second one being for 1 1/2 years to a teacher. It is estimated 1 million girls and women in Iran have temporary marriages due to the economic situation.

An Iranian Ritual of Courtesy called Taarof

In the video you see Habib offering money to the man who married them and the man refusing, then it happens a second time, then a third time.It is an Iranian cultural custom.

If you get it a taxi in Iran or go to the grovery store and the man says you do not have to pay it is not true,it is part of a courtesy ritual. Then you insist on paying a second time,he will say NO,then another time and maybe even more and finally he will accept it.He expects to be paid.It is called taarof, read:

The Koranic Verse by which Temporary Marriage is Justified

Chapter 4:24

“And all married women (are forbidden to you)(Note:forbidden for sex) save those who your right hands possess(Note:except for your slave women)

It is a decree of Allah for you. Lawful to you are all beyond those mentioned, so that you seek them with your wealth in honest wedlock, not debauchery.

And those of who you seek content give to them their portions as a duty(Note:give them their dowry)

And there is no sin for you in what you do by mutual agreement after the duty. Lo! Allah is ever Knower, Wise.”

Sunnis and Shias Agree

Both agree that Muhammad had authorized temporary marriage but the Sunnis believe he later abolished it and the Shias say no,that it was illegally abolished byOmar, the 3rd caliph of Islam, and friend and general of Muhammad.

They also disagree on the meaning of chapter 4:24,the Sunnis saying it refers to a permanent marriage and the Shias say it is a temporary one.

How are Shias different from Sunnis?

Besides the muta belief they are different in the followng:

The Koran

1.The Doctrine of Takiya (Dissimulation):

The Sunnis persecuted the Shias so they created the doctrine that a Shia could lie to a Sunni and say he was not one in other to avoid trouble.

It is based on 2 Passages in the Koran:

Example 1:

Chapter 16:106:

“Whoever, after he has believed in God denies him:

1.If he were forced/under compulsion to it

2.And if his heart remains steadfast in the faith,

3.Will be guiltless

4.But whoever opens his breast to infidelity,on such will be wrath from God, and a severe punishment waits them.”

Example 2:

Chapter 3:28:

“Let not the believers take the unbelievers for friends/allies, rather than the believers, for who does that belongs not to God in anything,

unless you have a fear of them. God warns you that You beware of Him, and to God is the homecoming.”

2.The Rejection of the First Three Caliphs of Islam:

After Muhammad died he was succeeded by:

a)Abu Bekr,his father-in-law.

b)Omar (one of Muhammad’s generals)

c)Othman(another of Muhammad’s companions)

Shias considered all 3 to have been nothing but usurpers, interlopers, while Sunnis call them “rightly-guided caliphs”.Shias say Ali,the son-in-law and cousin of Muhammad, married to Fatima,Muhammad’s daughter, and who was finally elected as the 4th caliph, should have been elected after Muhammad’s death from the beginning.

3.The Belief in the 12th Imam (also called the Mahdi)

1.In the 9th century a 5,6 or 7 year old child(who was born in 869 AD),the versions differ, who was a descendant of Muhammad, fell into a well in Samarra,Irak, another version says he was hid in it by his mother, and was never seen again.

2.They believe he has been sleeping or is in hiding for 1,150 years and will reappear in the last days and conquer the world for Islam.

His father was the 11th imam or religious leader chosen by God,The child was the 12th imam.

3.Sunnis believe that one day a descendant of Muhammad will appear to conquer the world for Islam. He is called the Mahdi.

4.Mahdi means “the Guided One” in Arabic.

5.The Shias believe the 12th Imam=the Mahdi

6.Plus the Mahdi will come with Jesus to conquer the world for Islam.
