Proof Reza Aslan,Muslim Intellectual from Iran,PhD in Religion,is no Real,Honest Scholar,Part 2

I have written a first part where a great intentional error of scholarship on a major point(regarding Aisha and the age of the consummation of her marriage) was done by Reza Aslan.Since he has a PhD in Religion it could not have been an unintentional mistake. Here is the first part:

Again introducing Reza Aslan

Reza Aslan (born 1972) is an Iranian-American writer and scholar of religions.Aslan’s family came to the US from Tehran in 1979, fleeing the Iranian Revolution. He is on the faculty at the University of California, Riverside, and is a contributing editor for The Daily Beast. His books include the international bestseller, his first book, “No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam”(2005), which has been translated into thirteen languages.

Later he wrote How to Win a Cosmic War:God, Globalization, and the End of the War on Terror (2009). Reza Aslan is CEO of Aslan Media Inc.His non-profit organization Aslan Media Initiatives (AslanMedia.com) utilizes social media technology to provide news and information about the Middle East to young people all over the world.

His Academic Credentials

1.Aslan has a Bachelor of Arts in religions from Santa Clara University

2.A Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School

3.A PhD in the Sociology of Religions from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

His Books in Progress

He is working on a biography of Jesus and a historical novel, set a thousand years ago, about a caravan traveling from Arabia to India.

Sin of Omission in his book “How to Win a Cosmic War”

Aslan again Omits Vital Information to his Readers which would Prove his Argument is Wrong

One of his arguments is Islam has nothing to do with motivating the suicide-bombers.He phrases his words in such a way as to imply to the reader that there is nothing in the Koran that can cause someone to blow himself up.First he makes reference to a famous study by Robert Pape,on page 101 Aslan says:

“Still, there is something uniquely repulsive about the tactic of suicide terrorism, even more so when it is framed as a religious act.Suicide terrorism is by no means a distinctly Islamic or even religious phenomenon.

The tactic was popularized by the Marxist militants of the Tamil Tigers during their violent insurgency against the Sri Lankan government.Robert Pape,a political scientist at the University of Chicago, has compiled a database of every suicide attack that took place in every part of the world from 1980 to 2003.His data demonstrated that “there is little connection between suicide terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism,or any one of the world’s religions.”In Pape’s database, secular groups account for a third of all suicide attacks.”

Who is Robert Pape?

Robert Anthony Pape (born 1960) is an American political scientist. known for his work on the rationale and causes of suicide terrorism.

Problems with Pape’s Scholarship

Pape published his first book in 1996 called “Bombing to Win: Air Power and Coercion in War”.He questions the conventional wisdom that coercive air power is both effective and relatively cheap. Rather than coercing citizens of the bombed nation to rise up against their government, coercive air power often backfires, resulting in a citizenry that is both surprisingly resilient and loyal to their government.

Pape has come under severe criticism from military historians who argue his arguments are selective. Pape casually dismisses the German Rotterdam Blitz, the Bombing of Belgrade in World War II and even 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia (after the event), which had forced the Dutch, Yugoslavs, and Serbs into capitulation rapidly. In the case of the 1999 air strikes, by air power alone.

His book about the Causes of Terrorism called “Dying to Win” (2005)

Argument 1:Islam is not a Cause why Muslims Blow themselves up as Suicide Terrorists

It contradicts many widely held beliefs about suicide terrorism. He examined groups as different as Al-Qaida and the Tamil Tigers.Based on an analysis of every known case of suicide terrorism from 1980 to 2003 (315 attacks as part of 18 campaigns), he concludes that there is “little connection between suicide terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism, or any one of the world’s religions... . Rather, what nearly all suicide terrorist attacks have in common is a specific secular and strategic goal: to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from territory that the terrorists consider to be their homeland” (p. 4). “The taproot of suicide terrorism is nationalism,” he argues; it is “an extreme strategy for national liberation(pp. 79–80).

Notice Pape said there is “little connection between suicide terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism” and not “little connection between terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism“.He tells us Islam is no cause for blowing yourself up.

Argument 2:Most Suicide Terrorists are not Poor

Pape also gives evidence that the majority of suicide terrorists do not come from impoverished or uneducated background, but from middle class origins and a significant level of education. In a criticism of Pape’s link between occupation and suicide terrorism, an article titled “Design, Inference, and the Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism” (published in The American Political Science Review), authors Scott Ashworth, Joshua D. Clinton, Adam Meirowitz, and Kristopher W. Ramsay from Princeton charged Pape with “sampling on the dependent variable” by limiting research only to cases in which suicide terror was used.In response, Pape argues that his research design is sufficient because it collected the universe of known cases of suicide terrorism. In response Ashworth et al. discuss how even large samples of the dependent variable cannot be used to explain variation in outcomes, why suicide terrorism happens in some places but not others, if the sample does not vary.

Why Aslan and Pape are both wrong

Aslan knows this but does not tell his readers and Pape is a bad scholar no matter how many university titles he has.Islam is one reason,a major reason, why anybody would do suicide terrorism.

1.First of all it is not suicide for them.

2.And in addition they believe that by dying for Islam they go directly to paradise,it is in the Koran.

3.Also in heaven they will have very beautiful women as wives, even if they are already married,it is in the Koran.

Are most Muslim suicide bombers poor and uneducated or well-off and educated?

Maybe Pape is right that most Muslim suicide bombers are well-off and not poor, maybe he is wrong. But this is certain:

1.Alot of poor and uneducated men become suicide bombers because of poverty.

2.They want to get out of their poverty but cannot, but in paradise they will be well-off.

3.They believe 100% they will go to heaven automatically if they die for Islam, plus get beautiful women,so why not do it?

Heaven is promised to them in the Koran

Example 1:

Chapter 3:168-170:

“Who said of their brothers, ‘Had they obeyed us, they would not have been slain.’ Say: ‘Then avert death from yourselves, if you speak truly.’ Count not those who were slain in God’s way as dead, but rather living with their Lord, by Him provided, rejoicing in the bounty that God has given them, and joyful in those who remain behind and have not joined them, because no fear shall be on them, neither shall they sorrow.”

Example 2:

Chapter 9:111:

“God has bought from the believers their selves and their possessions against the gift of Paradise; they fight in the way of God; they kill, and are killed; that is a promise binding upon God in the Torah, and the Gospel, and the Koran; and who fulfils his covenant truer than God? So rejoice in the bargain you have made with Him; that is the mighty triumph.”

To Continue regarding Aslan’s Sin of Omission

On page 102 he says:

“Nevertheless, there is no question that killing and dying are always easier to justify if they can be framed as ritual or ceremonial acts, which is why Jihadists refer to suicide terrorism as “martyrdom operations.”This is not a euphemism but an earnest attempt to infuse death with a sense of cosmic significance.

It seems not to matter that on the topic of suicide the Quran is absolutely clear:“Do not kill yourself,if someone does so [God] shall cast him into Hell(4:29-30).Nor does it seem important that countless sayings (Hadith) of the Prophet Muhammad refer to the gruesome punishment that awaits those who take their own lives.

Analysis

That is it,that is all.Nowhere in the book does he mention chapters 3:168-170 and 9:111 where paradise is promised. He does not because he is no real scholar,he hides that information from his readers because it goes against his argument.

The Sin of Commission by Aslan

On page 130 he says:

“By the British government’s own admission, the standard of living in Beeston Hill is among the worst in Britain. There is poverty,drugs,gangs-everything one finds in any forgotten, depressed neighborhood. There is also stark,in-your-face,matter-of-fact racism.ISLAM OUT OF BRITAIN! (Note:in capital letters in the original text)”

Analysis

That shows that there is no scholarship here since all know Islam is a religion,a set of ideas like Communism or Capitalism,it is not a race.
