Definition of the Arabic Word Jihad

It means “struggle” and you can take it any which way,just like in English.It can mean military struggle,a fighs or a spiritual one,just like in the book by Hitler Mein Kampf or My Struggle,which the wits have retitled My Jihad.

The Story that the Historical Muhammad said there were 2 Kinds of Jihads:a Greater,Spiritual Struggle and a Lesser,Military Struggle

Here is the story,or hadith(a story of the deeds and sayings of Muhammad or his companions):

First the historical context of the story,it is during the 10 year war beween the Muslims and the Meccans.

“We were told by Layth, on the authority of ‘Ata’, on the authority of Abu Rabah, on the authority of Jabir, who said, ‘The Prophet (salallaahu ‘alayhee wa sallam) returned from one of his battles, and thereupon told us,”You have arrived with an excellent arrival, you have come from the Lesser Jihad to the Greater Jihad – the striving of a servant (of Allah) against his desires.””

This Story is Repeated by Many Muslim Leaders in the West and appears in their Books on Islam

They say that the historical Muhammad said the greater jihad was to be a noble,good person,a spiritual struggle against evil desires and fighting for Islam was secondary.They also say “in Islam” being good,against your selfish wishes,and desires, is greater than fighting for Islam.

The Problem

They know all about it but they do not say it.The problem is that story is most highly false,the historical Muhammad never said it,and so how can you say it is “part of Islam?’

The “lesser versus greater jihad” hadith has a chain of transmission(or isnad,in Arabic)that is to say the completeness of the chain of narrators and the reputation of each individual narrators within the chain of oral tradition that has been categorized by Muslim scholars as “weak” (da`if).Some Muslim scholars even say it is a fabrication.A weak hadith is worthless for a Muslim.That shows intellectual dishonesty by many Muslim leaders in the West.In Muslim lands they do not use that argument.

Where that weak hadith appears

It is mentioned by El Khatib el Baghdadi(1002-1071) in his book “The History of Bagdad/Tarikh Bagdad”, transmitted by Yahya ibn el ‘Ala, who said :

“Leyth has reported that according to Ata,who said it according to Abu Rabah,who said it according to Jabir, that the Prophet said,coming back from one of his battles:

“We have returned safe and sound, we retunr from the Lesser Jihad/Jihad Asghar  to the Greater Jihad/ Jihad Akbar.

His companions asked:

“Oh Prophet,what jihad can be greater than the one we have just done?”

He answered:”It is the jihad(struggle,effort) of the servant(of Allah) against his own desires.“”.

The 6 Sunni Hadith Collections in Order of Authenticity

Among the Sunnis(90% of Muslims) there are 6 books that have the sayings and deeds of Muhammad and his companions.They are called hadiths.The first two,by Bukhari and Muslim,are the most authentic,for them.

The collections in order of authenticity are those written by:

1.Bukhari (died 870)

2.Muslim (died 874)

3.Al-Nasai (died 915)

4.Abu Dawud (died 888)

5.Al-Tirmidhi (died 892)

6.Ibn Majah (died 887)

In not a single one of these collections do you have the “greater jihad and lesser jihad” story.

Authenticity according to the Muslim Type of Scholarship

For them Bukhari,Muslim,etc used a good method for determining if X information was good.They:

1.Found the chain of transmission of narrators,what they called isnad.So even though 200 years had passed they determined that A was told the story by B,who was told by C,who was told by D,etc,who was told by Muhammad.

2.Then they determined if the narrators were people who had a reputation for honesty,piety,mental equilibrium.If one of the narrators had a bad reputation the hadith was not authentic.

3.They used mutiple attestation.If the saying attributed to Muhammad came from different people,different reliable narrators,then it was evidence of authenticity.

The Shias have their own Hadith Collections also

They are by 3 collectors known as “the three Muhammads”;

1.The Kitab al-Kafi by Muhammad ibn Ya’qub al-Kulayni al-Razi

2.The Man la yahduruhu al-Faqih by Muhammad ibn Babuya

3.The books Al-Tahdhib and Al-Istibsar, both by Shaykh Muhammad Tusi.

In none of them is there the “greater jihad and lesser jihad” story at all either.

The Koran itself says that Literally Fighting for Islam is Greater than not fighting

It talks of degrees of struggle/jihad,where the greater jihad is fighting, risking your life:

Chapter 4:95-96:

First,the historical context.All agree here the Koran is talking about the 10 year war between Muslims and Meccans.There were those Muslims who did not want to fight in battle.That is the context,a military one.

“Such believers as sit at home:

1.Are not the equals of those who struggle(do jihad) in the path of God with their possessions and their selves/lives.

2.God has preferred in rank(Note:Allah prefers the military jihad) those who struggle(do jihad) with their possessions and their selves/lives over the ones who sit at home;

3.Yet to each God has promised the reward most fair; and God has preferred those who struggle(do jihad) over the ones who sit at home for the bounty of a mighty wage,”

By the historical context the jihad or struggle here is a military struggle.

More evidence it is about the Ten-Year War

I refer to chapter 4:95-96 saying the historical context was the 10 year war.

The proof is that a few  verses later it says:

Chapter 4:102:

“When you(Note:Muhammad) are among them and perform for them the prayer,let a party of them stand with you and let them take their weapons.

When they bow themselves with you let them be behind you and let another party who have not prayed come and pray with you,taking their precautions and their weapons.

The unbelievers wish that you should neglect your weapons and your baggage  then  they might turn on you at once.

So What?

That Koranic passage utterly contradicts the hadith during the 10 year war the historical Muhammad (that is the context of the hadith,by the way) had said that military jihad is the lesser jihad,no,military jihad is the greater jihad.

So a Muslim who did not fight but lived as a saint,a pacifist,did not harm anybody,was for non-violence,did a jihad against his evil desires was worth less than a soldier in the battlefield fighting for Islam.
