Voltaire(1694-1778) was a brilliant French writer and philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. He was one of the intellectual fathers of the French Revolution of 1789.His masterpiece is the literary satire of optimism called Candide, where he mocks the idea that this is “the best of all worlds.”
He was a deist,a deist believes in God but one who never intervenes, miracles never happen. He is famous for his saying:”If God did not exist it would be necessary to invent him.”
He strongly condemned Muhammad, calling him a charlatan and a liar, and was also against Christianity, but admired Jesus. He was for tolerance and human rights saying :”I do not agree with anything you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
Definition of a Moderate
What is a moderate? This is the first thing to determine.A moderate is one who agrees with human rights, which are:
1.Freedom of Speech:
Like freedom of the press, for example, and not to be persecuted for your philosophical, political, religious, and literary opinions.
2.Freedom of Religion.
3.Freedom of Assembly:
The right to hold peaceful demonstrations.
4.The right not be discriminated against for political, ethnic, religious, linguistic, racial reasons or because of the color of your skin.
The Percentage of Muslims that Support Terrorists(like Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, etc.)
They say it is 15%, or 195 million of the 1.3 billion muslims.Others say it is 30%. Obviously they are not moderates.
The Moderate Muslim
It is simply the Muslim who agrees with human rights completely, 100%,with no ifs, buts or maybes,no conditions applied. One can not say “I agree we should not discriminate / persecute someone for his political views but I agree that one can discriminate another because of his race.”
Read this Article about Two Real, Authentic Moderate Muslim Intellectuals(one a Sudanese Patriot and another Khomeini’s own Grandson)
It also has a link to a third man,Egyptian and Italian intellectual Magdi Allam, who was a real moderate Muslim also when he still believed in Islam. Now he is a Christian.
Paul says he Personally knew Peter and John (two of the early followers of Jesus) and also James (the half-brother of Jesus):
The three most important leaders of the first Christians were Paul,Peter and James.James was the leader of the Christians in Jerusalem.
”Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Cephas(Note:Peter) and stayed with him fifteen days.I saw none of the other apostles, only James, the Lord’s brother.I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie.”
”Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. ……. On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised. For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles.
James, Cephas(Note:Peter) and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship(Note:approved of me) when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.
When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.
When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, ”You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs? ””
The Right to Criticize Paul and Freedom of Expression
The ideas of Paul are fundamental. He personally knew James,Peter and John.In Muslim literature you read he was the real founder of Christianity. And Paul in his letters says that Jesus was God and that the early disciples believed Jesus physically resurrected from the dead.It is even worse because Muslims almost always say Paul was:
Ask any Muslim and he will say he has the freedom of speech and expression right to say negative things about Paul.To fine him $500 for hate speech and Christianityphobia, put him in jail for days or months for criticism of Paul or to execute him for it is wrong.
Compare the Two Situations
Regarding Paul we have that:
1.For Christians Paul was a holy man and a prophet of God.
2.For Muslims Paul was a liar and a false prophet.
Regarding Muhammad we have that:
1.For Christians Muhammad was unholy man and a false prophet.
2.For Muslims Muhammad was a holy man and a prophet of God.
Why Muslims have to Demonize Paul
It is because he says he personally knew James,Peter and John and that they believed in the resurrection.Paul also proclaimed that Jesus was God.Since the first disciples of Jesus approved of Paul they would not have condemned his idea. That is very serious because Paul is saying:
1.The historical Jesus said he was God.
2.But the Koran says Jesus never said he was God.
3.Then,for a Muslim,Paul has to be a liar, charlatan, opportunist.Because if he was being honest then Jesus did say he was God and that makes the Koran false. In other words Islam is false,as simple as that.
Non-Muslims Speaking Negatively of Muhammad
As I said before no Muslim will ever agree you have the right to legally punish him or her for criticism of Paul.Yet if a non-Muslim says:
1.That Muhammad was a liar.
2.And a charlatan.
3.And an opportunist.
4.And a manipulator
Then those same Muslims would be for legally punishing you for:
1.Incitement to hatred.
2.The famous “Islamophobia“.
3.Lack of respect of another person’s religion:it has hurt his or her feelings.
According to that simple logic I say very few Muslims are real, authentic moderates:that is to say real supporters of human rights.
Type of Intolerance and Degree of Intolerance
The situation is as follows:
1.We have some 15%(or 30%) of Muslims who support the terrorists:they are not moderates.
2.We have even more Muslims who are for Islamic law(Sharia). They hate the terrorists but agree with the terrorists’ idea of having Islamic law.It turns out that Sharia is against the right to critique Muhammad(which is against freedom of expression). They are not moderates.
3.Then we have Muslims who are against the worst parts of Islamic law, like those in the West.Yet they still agree that if you criticize Muhammad you should be fined hundreds of dollars for a “hate crime,Islamophobia” or be sent to jail or even be executed.
4.Yet they will not agree if you do the same to them for speaking against Paul.So they are not moderates either.
It is obvious that the type of intolerance is the same(a religious intolerance),the only thing that changes is the degree of intolerance(from extreme to less extreme).
